The Solidarity Room Project Welcomes You
We are all reading about immigration in the news everyday- how Trump is increasing hurdles for refugees and asylum seekers, and threatening to flood sanctuary cities like NYC to discourage support. Together, we can have a dignified response and make a concrete difference. The Solidarity Room Project is a New York City based volunteer group working to help pay the living expenses of people seeking asylum in the US who have landed in our city. We are gathering donations to maintain rooms in private homes that offer individuals, couples, or families a temporary stay while they are going through the political asylum application process in the United States, allowing them time and support in a new city and culture. We are currently supporting one family in a Brooklyn cooperative home, and we expect to be supporting another couple soon.
New York City has been a site of immigration throughout its history, leading to great diversity today. Wherever someone is from in the world, they are likely to find a strong community of people with similar experiences. For these and many other reasons, many people who seek asylum in the US choose to do so here. However, it is also one of the most expensive places in the world to live. People awaiting judgement on their asylum application in NYC often live in the homeless shelter system. To offer more safety and comfort, help us welcome into our home people struggling through the bureaucratic hurdles our country has put in place while dealing with life threatening situations in their home countries.
Where Does Your Money Go?
Since Summer 2019, The Solidarity Room Project has been able to cover the housing expenses of a family of asylum seekers in Brooklyn, NY. All donations go directly to paying the rent, utilities, and food costs while the family is hosted in a cooperative home. We hope to soon grow to connect trusted hosts to asylum seekers and to cover living expenses for others. We are limited only by the funding we can crowdsource for this project! Consider becoming a sustaining member to provide a sense of stability for those benefiting from your generosity.
Info about Asylum Process
People who seek asylum are escaping real danger, persecution, abuse, and/or torture. Read more about who they are and some of the concerns they may be dealing with. Our government structures complicate their experiences: people who are awaiting judgement on their asylum applications are not allowed to work, get no assistance for housing or food, and need sponsors to pledge to help them. View a quick overview of the process of asylum application here. While they are getting on their feet in the US, we will welcome them into our home to provide them a safe place to live, eat, and build some social connections.
